I was dying.

In the book I read as a kid, Chicken Soup for the Soul, I read an entry, which I have seen on social media several times since:

First, I was dying to finish high school and start college.

And then, I was dying to finish college and start working.

And then, I was dying to marry and have children.

And then, I was dying for my children to grow old enough for school.

And then, I was dying to retire.

And now, I am dying...

and suddenly, I realize I forgot to live...

I was dying to finish high school. I was dying to grow up. I've thought of this book entry many times while in school. Despite the many different parts of high school that I will be glad to be moving on from, there are many things that I was dying to be finished with, that I will dearly miss.

As school and sports wind down, I am glad to have known this poem. It taught me to value the difficult, rough, and crazy situations we are all in, and to enjoy the experiences. I find it very challanging to not get caught up in wishing my time away on the future. Reading this poem helps me realize how important and valuable living in the moment is.

I'll miss, and hope to carry on, the wonderful friendships that I have made with y'all, and I will think fondly upon all of the great years I have shared with everyone.

  1. Alright so first of all, I'm so glad to have reconnected with you in high school. Thanks for being one of my best friends since we were young. That being said, I am thrilled that we are going to college together and look forward to our adventures in college. I know you will succeed at Carolina and look forward to watching it. Thanks for being a great friend and an even better person.

  2. Yo Grayson, I can't believe you edited that poem, everyone knows it goes, ..."First I was dying to finish Arrested Development cause it's the dopest show ever, and then I was dying to rewatch Inherent Vice cause it's Inherent f**king Vice, and then I was dying to get through listening to all the albums of Tycho, Belle & Sebastian, Alabama Shakes, William Onyeabor, and Gorillaz (and NOT Jack Johnson), and then I was dying to meet at Jubala, and then I was dying..... and you know how the rest goes. Grayson your blog post was pretty swell. It's been nice reconnecting with you...not like in a Lego block way or Avatar tail kind of way (just for clarification), and I guess I'll see you at Chapel Hill (if you don't end up being brutally murdered by Dolphins at the Pitch Perfect 2 premiere), most likely from a distance as I walk to class and see you playing Frisbee or something else Grayson-like. Anyway that's it, also your drum playing is on point and let nobody, nobody, nobody, nobody, nobody, nobody, nobody, nobody, nobody, nobody, nobody, nobody, nobody, nobody, nobody, nobody, nobody, tell you different. #Brassfield #WoffordNeverForget #TangledisgreaterthanFrozen #Bonnaroo

  3. Woah. Did Grayson Holmes just quote poetry? This is weird... I've known you almost my whole life and I didn't know you appreciated literature hahaha.
I actually love this poem too though. I've thought about it a couple of times because I often get caught up in what I'm doing that I forget to enjoy life, much like you said you do.
I've enjoyed knowing you and being friends with you though. I loved the weird times we've had on numerous bus rides, trick-or-treating, random hang outs and what-not. It's going to be weird going to a school without Grayson Holmes next year... Thank you for being a good friend to me all of these years. I'm going to miss you and I hope you have a great time at UNC!

  5. Grayson-
Have an awesome time at Carolina! We've come full circle (fun fact: I still have a drawing you did as a freshman) and you've continued to be someone who works hard and enjoys learning (I think). The one thing I can say about you is that you are consistent, which is a great thing to be.
    Stay consistent!
